What people ask before they start.
Check-ins and safeguards
What if I just forget to check in?
Nothing happens for weeks. We remind you, try a second channel, and can phone you. Only then do we ask your verifiers. Even after they confirm, a grace period runs with a stop link on every channel you have.
What if I'm in hospital, or travelling with no signal?
Pause your check-ins for up to 90 days before you go. If you can't, your verifiers will tell us you're alive when we ask them, and that resets everything.
Who should I choose as a verifier?
Someone who would know quickly if you died, and who you trust not to say so when it isn't true: a spouse, a sibling, a close friend. You can require both of two verifiers to agree.
Could someone fake my death to get a message sent?
They would have to keep you from answering every check-in for weeks, convince your verifiers, and get through the grace period without you using a single stop link. For the most sensitive messages, require a death certificate as well.
Do you check obituaries?
If you turn it on. When a check-in is missed, we search published obituaries for your name and town. A match only means we ask your verifiers right away instead of waiting. Nothing is ever sent because of an obituary alone, and if it's someone else with your name, you'll just get an extra “are you OK?” message.
Your messages
Can you read what I write?
No. Each message is encrypted when you seal it, and the key is only released when it's time to deliver. Our staff can see who your recipients are, so we can reach them, but never what you wrote.
Can I change or cancel a message?
Yes, any time until it's delivered. Open it, change it, and seal it again.
What if Since I'm Gone closes?
You can download every message you've written at any time, as plain files. Paid plans are paid up front, and that money is set aside to keep messages stored and delivered.
What happens to my messages if I stop paying?
Sealed messages are always delivered. A plan lets you write and change messages; it never holds back one that's already sealed.
Can my message be shared publicly?
Only if you choose to, one message at a time, for our public archive of letters people left behind. It's off unless you turn it on. A shared message appears only after it's been delivered and a waiting period has passed, with names and places removed, and only if no one it was written to objects. Every shared message is reviewed first, and video stays private unless you share it separately.
Is there anything I can't send?
Threats, harassment, and messages meant to hurt someone break our terms. A recipient can report a message, and we can stop any further deliveries from that account.
If you received a message
Why did I get this?
Someone who cares about you wrote you a message and asked us to deliver it, either on today's date or after their death. We are only the messenger.
Do I have to open it now?
No. It doesn't expire, and we won't keep asking. Choose “Not today” and we'll remind you once in a week, or never, as you prefer.
Can I keep a copy?
Yes. Download it as a file, or ask for a printed copy in the mail.
I don't want to receive these.
